Simply put, social media is a place to be “social”. Now that may seem obvious, and quite understated to some, but that is really the foundation of the space. Social media exist because people have an inherent desire, part of our inner being, to reach out and talk to, interact with, embrace and love one another. It is who we are as people, and many studies have shown that if people don’t do this, there are serious emotional and mental consequences that ensue.
Now I am a self proclaimed “Social Media Evangelist”, and am completely overjoyed and excited about the possibilities for the space. I talk to people offline every chance I get about social media. It is the offline discussions that bring the online clarity for so many people (and actually I believe there are many online that don’t understand it).
In Social Media, we get to really connect, to bond, to reveal who we are, and to build an incredible network of friends. Chances are, we’ll probably never meet, but through the Internet we can interact, share, talk, video blog, you name it. We can even ustream from our iPhones live. Can you imagine what our space will look like in another 5 years, or 10?
Currently, there is a huge opportunity to clarify the space for an offline community eager to learn and understand how they can, in their minds, “take advantage” of the space. Traditional advertising and marketing company are dumbfounded by it. Some discard it all together as the “place for teenagers”.
MAN ARE THEY WRONG!
Others want in, but are trying to use their ‘offline” methods here and failing miserably (this is what I did at the beginning). I was speaking to a good friend recently in advertising, and she is totally clueless about the space, but knows she needs to direct her department this direction. I cannot tell you who she is or who she works for, but she runs the advertising and marketing for this very large company, and oversees a $125 million dollar budget, and hasn’t a clue about Social Media. We’ll talk more, and I will help her understand the space much better. I will continue my evangelism.
So, what is a Social Media Evangelist? It is someone with the desire to learn how we as people communicate. It is someone who communicates with passion. It is someone willing to share who they are and what they do, to share their love for people and the world. It is you, it is me, it is all of us. Social Media just allows us to do this with each other, anywhere in the world.
Now that is pretty cool…

Billy,
You right on target that it is “Social” not advertising. I am in the Mortgage & REI niches and most are clueless they try their offline tactics on Social network and fail miserably.
Keep up the great information.

Hey Bill, take a look at this video from Perry Belcher describing how social media is suppose to work. Go to http://drivingtraffic.com/
Bill, I agree with you wholeheartedly. This is such an exciting way to connect with others. As long as we connect for the sake of interacting and providing value to each other, versus trying to cold-sell people, we will be on the right track in this new space.
Awesome post Bill – gave me another perspective in the way you point out that it’s inherent in our nature to want to connect and share – anyone who wants to do that will find people waiting with open arms…Cheers, Glen
I have seen the light my brother and I am right there with you. Keep spreading the good word.
