Today, Twitter has taken a few small steps to alleviate one of their biggest issues for users by introducing Advanced Twitter Search to their user interface.

In a post on their blog, Twitter notes that an update to their search algorithms will now suggest key accounts to follow for any topic you search for. For example, if you search for racing, you’ll get a bunch of NASCAR and other folks suggested to you. Previously, these searches were only looking for a term like “racing” in an account’s name or username. So yes, this is much smarter, and better of the advanced Twitter search functionality.

Advanced Twitter Search: A new day for Twitter users!

The other key change is buried at the bottom of Twitter’s post:

One more thing! Now, when you search on Twitter.com, you’ll see a tip from Twitter. This tip points you to a set of search operators and our advanced Twitter search page, which help you more quickly find what you’re looking for.

Yes, Twitter has finally ported over Advanced Twitter Search to Twitter (or “New Twitter” if you can still call it that). Previously, these advanced Twitter search options like phrases, hashtags, people, places, sentiments, and others only resided on the Advanced Twitter Search standalone site. Some of these features have been very useful, but no one uses them because it has been nearly impossible to find them unless you knew about the advanced Twitter search site.

Now, Twitter is highlighting advanced Twitter search under the main search box after every search you do. And the entire thing resides on twitter.com instead of a separate sub-domain.

Advanced Twitter Search, Making It Easier

<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-291170" title="as" src="http://tctechcrunch.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/as.png?w=620&h=610" alt="Advanced Twitter Search"width="496" height="488" />

via techcrunch.com

Advanced Twitter Search: Perhaps Twitter Does Care?

To be clear, even with Advanced Twitter Search, Twitter is far from where it needs to be in search — results still only go back five days. But this is a good first step. Perhaps Twitter is beginning to realize their lack of concern for users is affecting the engagement of their users overall on the platform? Therefore the much improved alignment between search topics and users is a positive change, and with this step of making available Advanced Twitter Search, perhaps Twitter does care a tiny bit about their user’s experience.

Twitter professes to have over 120 million users, but how many Twitter users are there really? To answer this question, one must first understand what a real user on Twitter needs to be doing.

I am breaking them down into 4 groups. You decide how many Twitter users are there really.

How Many Twitter Users Are There Really?

The Shell Accounts

First to answer the questions of How Many Twitter Users are there, users should be connected to other people, otherwise known as followers. According to the Twitter API data gathered by Silicon Alley Insider, only half of the 120 million users are following 2 or more people. Not much of a conversation happening there. Therefore, I call these users Shell Accounts and they should be thrown out entirely. So to determine how many Twitter users, that leaves 60 million left to examine.

How Many Twitter Users: Friends and Family Accounts

Additionally, only about 10% of Twitter accounts follow more than 50 people, or about 12 million accounts.

This could be considered the friends and family plan for Twitter users. Perhaps these users are the ones who follow a few, and then get bored or were never interested in the first place. They don’t continue to follow and engage with other like minded people.

How Many Twitter Users: Marketers and Power Users

I believe the power users truly answer the question of how many twitters users there are. These are the folks that use Twitter daily, either as promotion for their content, and general conversation and engagement of followers. According to Twitter, there are about 1.5 million users in this category. I believe this group is the real number of true users.

How Many Twitters Users: Super User Accounts

The chart shows there are only 2 accounts that follow more then 524,000 people. Clearly the users that are able to scale this high, since there is a ration of 120% following to followers, don’t need to or choose to follow many people back. What is this percentage for you stats nuts like me…. .00000167%.

So, four groups. In a previous post we looked at the truth about the average Twitter user. Now, cast your vote below in a comment to decide how many Twitter users are there really.

Managing your online network is critical, whether you’re looking for a job, trying to advance in your career, or you’re starting a business. Think of the Internet () as a global talent pool that has more contact information than the White Pages. In fact, 80 percent of available jobs are never even advertised, with more than half of all employees finding their jobs through networking, according to BH Careers International.

Social networks have connected and exposed us to more people than ever before. With all the online friends and followers you’ve accumulated, it’s become increasingly complicated to make sense of your social graph and use it to your advantage. It’s also never been more important to build your contact database, organize it, and then put it to work for you. The old adage “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” is true, so consider your rolodex more valuable than your wallet when it comes to achieving success in business.

Here is how to create a basic contact management strategy, stay connected and organized from your desktop to your phone, and give you some insight onto how to expand your network.

Your Contact Management Strategy

You will always have different tiers of relationships, from family, to friends, to associates, to acquaintances and everyone in between. In order to organize your database, you need to have specific categories in mind. Consider things like the strength of your relationship, how important the relationship is to you, the last time you connected with them, three things about them, what company they work for, their location, and their contact information (e-mail, phone, address, LinkedIn ()). You can use a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, an Access Database, Act!, or another similar software package to help manage your contacts, using these columns. Aside from these software packages, there are other applications listed below that can help you. By organizing your contacts under these main categories, it will allow you to reconnect with the right people, and expand your relationships.

1. From Your Social Graph to Your Desktop

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-290864" style="display: inline;" title="twitterexporter" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/twitterexporter.jpg" alt="organize contact networking"width="512" height="136" />

It’s very important that you have physical copies of your contact database as a backup. Although, you may participate in a handful of social networks, that data resides in the cloud, and not on your desktop. Backing up your social graph means that if, for some reason, your social media profile disappears, is removed entirely, or the social network collapses and you lose everything, you’ll be protected regardless. Try to get in the habit of exporting your contacts so that you have a copy on your desktop in an Excel file.

Here is how to save your social friends, contacts, and followers on your desktop:

Facebook (): Although Facebook might appear as a wall garden, there’s actually a trick to capturing your friends’ phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Create or use your existing Yahoo! e-mail account and import your Facebook friends right into your address book. Then download the .CSV file to your desktop.

LinkedIn: After logging into LinkedIn, go straight to the “connections” link in the global navigation area. At the bottom of the page, you’ll see “export connections.” From the next screen, you can download the .CSV file to your desktop.

Twitter (): You don’t have the ability to view email addresses or phone numbers of your Twitter followers. You can, however, download a .CSV file of 100 of your followers to your desktop by using Twitter Export. The information in the spreadsheet will be the name, user name, follower and following count, and their bios.

Update: Title updated to reflect this is in-stream advertising platforms, more at the foot of the post.

In a lengthy post, Twitter has just announced it will ban all third party ad platforms that inject advertising into users twitter streams. This technically means the end of Ad.ly and potentially the just launched (as in today at TechCrunch’s Disrupt) Tweetup.

Tthe significant part of Twitter’s announcement is below:

As our primary concern is the long-term health and value of the network, we have and will continue to forgo near-term revenue opportunities in the service of carefully metering the impact of Promoted Tweets on the user experience. It is critical that the core experience of real-time introductions and information is protected for the user and with an eye toward long-term success for all advertisers, users and the Twitter ecosystem. For this reason, aside from Promoted Tweets, we will not allow any third party to inject paid tweets into a timeline on any service that leverages the Twitter API. We are updating our Terms of Service to articulate clearly what we mean by this statement, and we encourage you to read the updated API Terms of Service to be released shortly.

<img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-582" title="refollow-following-me" src="http://billcrosby.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/refollow-following-me-300x201.png" alt="unfollow"width="300" height="201" />Twitter has been slowly weeding out unfollow tools, especially the bulk unfollow tools. Their reasoning is simple. They want to eliminate the bulk unfollow/follow practices on Twitter.

These practices to build up accounts have decreased the engagement on Twitter. And the average Twitter user has quickly diminished to highly unengaged.

With that said though, many people have asked me what is the best available tool to “Shed” (i.e. unfollow) unwanted, unengaged followers (ie. bots and general low life’s). So, I thought I would just show you in this quick video below my favorite tool for unfollowing on Twitter, ReFollow.com.

Use ReFollow.com for your unfollow needs:

Note: The best way to view this unfollow video is the click the full screen button located in the lower right corner of the video screen (then use the esc key to exit thereafter).

Unfortunately for the microblogging startup, the stats say that most of its users aren’t very active.

The study looked at around 19 million Twitter accounts (PDF) in order to figure out how people are using Twitter (). It started with one assumption: an active or “True” Twitter user has at least 10 followers, follows at least 10 people, and had tweeted at least 10 times. By that definition though, only 21% of Twitter users are active users.

There’s a great deal of interesting data in the breakdown. Only 26% of Twitter users had 10 followers or more by December 2009, while only 40% were following 10 people or more (in fact, a majority of Twitter users, 51%, were following less than five people).

As Director of Twitter’s Trust and Safety team, a big part of my job is focused on the detection and prevention of spam and abuse. A couple weeks ago, Biz explained how Twitter users were being victimized by phishing scams spread primarily through links in Direct Messages. Basically, people click the link and bad things happen. My team can only detect these scams after malicious links have already been sent out.

Today, we’re launching a new service to protect users that strikes a major blow against phishing and other deceitful attacks. By routing all links submitted to Twitter through this new service, we can detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of bad links across all of Twitter. Even if a bad link is already sent out in an email notification and somebody clicks on it, we’ll be able keep that user safe.

Since these attacks occur primarily on Direct Messages and email notifications about Direct Messages, this is where we have focused our initial efforts. For the most part, you will not notice this feature because it works behind the scenes but you may notice links shortened to twt.tl in Direct Messages and email notifications. Special thanks to @wfarner and @ram for building this service and helping keep us all a little safer!

By no means are Twitter and Facebook perfect: You might wish that Facebook made it more intuitive to hide FarmVille or certain status updates. Or, maybe you wish that Twitter would introduce a new feature like nested tweets. Good news: For many of these website tweaks or suggestions, there’s likely to be a script you can download to fit the bill.

Here are my top eight picks for Facebook and Twitter add-ons. Many of these solve common user gripes (such as not knowing to what site shortened URLs will bring you on Twitter). Some, like “Facebook Fixer,” enhance the site and allow you to customize it beyond standard options. Do note that most of these scripts require that you first download Greasemonkey, and not all are compatible with every browser, so be sure to check the requirements before you download a script.

1. Facebook Fixer.

This script lets you customize your Facebook account and offers many features that are enabled by default, but can be enabled or disabled independently. Some of these features include: larger profile and album pictures; homepage customization where you can hide independent sections such as pokes, suggestions and “connect with friends”; and calendar integration, which includes a link on each profile that synchs birthdays with Google Calendar, or the option to export a file with all your friends’ birthdays, which can be imported into sites such as Google Calendar, Yahoo, Apple iCal, Microsoft Outlook and more.

2. Facebook Purity.

The Facebook Purity script cleans up your homepage and removes all newsfeed items from third-party games such as Mafia Wars and FarmVille, and zaps announcements on who’s become friend with who, who’s attending a certain event, who joined a group and who became a fan of something. Optional items you can block include: comments on a status, photo, photo album or link; tags in a photo or photo album; and event postings.

3. Unfriend Finder.
