A big, powerful wild card just entered the movie distribution business. Warner Bros. Entertainment <a class="body" title="WARNER BROS.

Facebook is already the fastest-growing video service, so adding movies and, one would presume, TV episodes, should accelerate that. Facebook was the sixth-largest video provider in January, according to ComScore, ahead of Microsoft, Turner and Hulu. Unlike Hulu or YouTube, Facebook (thanks to Zynga) already has a robust credits marketplace made up largely of people buying virtual goods for games like “Farmville” and “Mafia Wars.”

Hulu and Apple’s iTunes have plenty of content and have been working to add social functionality to their services. Why? Because while search is great, TV and movies are social experiences, and they believe that social connections should play a big role in the discovery of content. People want to know what their friends are watching, and Facebook is best positioned to facilitate that.

The big question is how far YouTube goes into movie and TV sales and rentals. Right now YouTube has a limited catalog of movies for rent, such as “Reservoir Dogs” for $1.99, and via ad-supported streaming, like Jackie Chan’s “The Young Master.” YouTube’s strategy seems pretty clear: It won’t pay big Hollywood fees for content. Rather, it’s looking to cultivate a new market for short-form video that exists largely outside Hollywood.

“The Dark Knight” isn’t a new release (2008), and Facebook appears to be getting the same terms as iTunes, which rents the film for $2.99 and sells it for $9.99. One thing Facebook (and Netflix) have that Apple doesn’t is a beachhead as an app on most internet-connected TVs.

Another way they’re similar: Facebook takes a 30% cut of credits transactions, just like iTunes. Still, if Facebook allows studios to sell their wares directly and set their terms, there’s no reason its catalog won’t expand quickly. Netflix shares opened nearly 3% lower on the Nasdaq the morning this deal was announced.

via adage.com

No surprise here. Facebook is going to start making a ton of money off their primary strength, shear number of people.

How do you feel about renting movies on Facebook?

Facebook is becoming an intriguing hot spot when it comes to receiving the latest information. On one end of the spectrum, we have the media sources that offer the latest local and world news. Conversely, it is also a spot for the latest updates on the personal lives of our friends. Today we look at five different tools that aggregate all of this content a layout that looks like a newspaper or magazine, which some people might consider more organized than how social media sites are designed. Read on to learn more about these applications.

Flipboard

<img class="alignright" src="http://www.allfacebook.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Flipboard-150x150.jpg" alt="hack facebook feed"width="150" height="150" />Flipboard offers iPad users the opportunity to create a digital magazine experience from your profile on Facebook. Begin at a table of contents offering a variety of different social sites the application utilizes. Begin by simply connecting to your Facebook account. The app then offers all of the information shared by your friends and the pages you follow, in a layout that truly has all the attributes of a magazine.

The service makes it easy to access and comment on posts directly from within Flipboard. With a sleek design and layout, it serves as an alternative to check for updates besides using the Facebook application. I have read and heard of a few bugs and hiccups along the way which including page-loading time as an example. The application is a very popular selection though, and it even was named Apple’s iPad Application of the Year in 2010. Considering it is free, do you have much to lose? Give the application a try here.

LinkNotify

<img class="alignright" src="http://www.allfacebook.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/LinkNotify1.jpg" alt="hack facebook feed"width="150" height="150" />LinkNotify brings you links shared by your friends, as well as pages you follow, in a news headline format that makes it easy to stay current in a more time efficient fashion. Using the service, you can block any unwanted friends or page links, without permanently removing them from your news feed.

Overall, LinkNotify is most useful for those who follow a number of businesses and news source. For anybody who feels as if content from pages takes over their news feed at times, the free service presents the latest from shared sites in a way that is less overwhelming. It also, at least in my case, entices me to click on more of the content.

Besides page loading issues I have personally seen — I had to hit the refresh button on more than a few occasions — this service does deliver on its promises.

Newsbook

<img class="alignright" src="http://www.allfacebook.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Newsbook.jpg" alt="hack facebook feed"width="150" height="150" />Newsbook is an innovative social media content aggregator that just launched this week, calling itself a “cheat sheet for the most popular news online.” The tool offers a worthwhile shortcut to finding popular trends on Facebook.

This app organizes the biggest media sources — including CNN and The New York Times — into convenient categories. Under each article, you will find the total number of viewers that have shared the item. This is makes the hot topic issues just a click away, and makes staying current more time efficient.

Overall, Newsbook is certainly worth a visit. In the chaotic way new information is often presented on the web, this content aggregator offers a simplified digital news experience powered and directed by all Facebook users.

Paper.Li

<img class="alignright" src="http://www.allfacebook.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/paperli1.jpg" alt="hack facebook feed"width="150" height="150" />Paper.Li is an original concept, offering a Facebook newspaper comprised of various public posts built around a topic of your choice. Simply choose a title, a subject, which language you speak and within a couple of minutes your paper will appear.

Peruse your paper in six sections, as they would be organized in an actual printed edition. At the bottom of each update you will see the page or user that shared the information. While I was slightly confused as my initial expectations were that the content seen would be that from my own personal friends, I did quickly become just as intrigued by the information on the screen.

Paper.Li is a creative application that adds a worthwhile spin to viewing the world of Facebook from a vantage point of a newspaper. Take a glance at hot topics surrounding your specific interests, and check back on a daily basis for updates. If you do not mind your news updates being a bit random, you can certainly find interesting information on the application.

via allfacebook.com

Thanks to allfacebook.com for this great list. I personally love Flipboard. Tell me what you think of the sites after your visit.

In other words, go ahead, leave a comment below

According to a report by market researcher Morpace, among US Facebook users time on Facebook rises to 1 in 3 minutes spent online.

Unsurprisingly, despite Facebook’s growing appeal to older users, 18- to 34-year-olds spend the most time on the site per week, at 8.5 hours out of 22.4 spent online. Weekly Facebook time drops to 4.6 hours among users ages 55 and older, representing a lower proportion of that group’s average of 21.5 hours per week on the internet.

Broken down by race and ethnicity, Morpace found Facebook usage heaviest by Asians. Not only did that group spend the most hours per week on the site, but they also devoted the greatest percentage of their weekly internet time to Facebook (39.6%, compared with 35.1% among blacks, the second-highest group). Hispanics spent the fewest hours on Facebook, and even compared with their low average time online came in last.

Managing your online network is critical, whether you’re looking for a job, trying to advance in your career, or you’re starting a business. Think of the Internet () as a global talent pool that has more contact information than the White Pages. In fact, 80 percent of available jobs are never even advertised, with more than half of all employees finding their jobs through networking, according to BH Careers International.

Social networks have connected and exposed us to more people than ever before. With all the online friends and followers you’ve accumulated, it’s become increasingly complicated to make sense of your social graph and use it to your advantage. It’s also never been more important to build your contact database, organize it, and then put it to work for you. The old adage “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” is true, so consider your rolodex more valuable than your wallet when it comes to achieving success in business.

Here is how to create a basic contact management strategy, stay connected and organized from your desktop to your phone, and give you some insight onto how to expand your network.

Your Contact Management Strategy

You will always have different tiers of relationships, from family, to friends, to associates, to acquaintances and everyone in between. In order to organize your database, you need to have specific categories in mind. Consider things like the strength of your relationship, how important the relationship is to you, the last time you connected with them, three things about them, what company they work for, their location, and their contact information (e-mail, phone, address, LinkedIn ()). You can use a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, an Access Database, Act!, or another similar software package to help manage your contacts, using these columns. Aside from these software packages, there are other applications listed below that can help you. By organizing your contacts under these main categories, it will allow you to reconnect with the right people, and expand your relationships.

1. From Your Social Graph to Your Desktop

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-290864" style="display: inline;" title="twitterexporter" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/twitterexporter.jpg" alt="organize contact networking"width="512" height="136" />

It’s very important that you have physical copies of your contact database as a backup. Although, you may participate in a handful of social networks, that data resides in the cloud, and not on your desktop. Backing up your social graph means that if, for some reason, your social media profile disappears, is removed entirely, or the social network collapses and you lose everything, you’ll be protected regardless. Try to get in the habit of exporting your contacts so that you have a copy on your desktop in an Excel file.

Here is how to save your social friends, contacts, and followers on your desktop:

Facebook (): Although Facebook might appear as a wall garden, there’s actually a trick to capturing your friends’ phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Create or use your existing Yahoo! e-mail account and import your Facebook friends right into your address book. Then download the .CSV file to your desktop.

LinkedIn: After logging into LinkedIn, go straight to the “connections” link in the global navigation area. At the bottom of the page, you’ll see “export connections.” From the next screen, you can download the .CSV file to your desktop.

Twitter (): You don’t have the ability to view email addresses or phone numbers of your Twitter followers. You can, however, download a .CSV file of 100 of your followers to your desktop by using Twitter Export. The information in the spreadsheet will be the name, user name, follower and following count, and their bios.

By no means are Twitter and Facebook perfect: You might wish that Facebook made it more intuitive to hide FarmVille or certain status updates. Or, maybe you wish that Twitter would introduce a new feature like nested tweets. Good news: For many of these website tweaks or suggestions, there’s likely to be a script you can download to fit the bill.

Here are my top eight picks for Facebook and Twitter add-ons. Many of these solve common user gripes (such as not knowing to what site shortened URLs will bring you on Twitter). Some, like “Facebook Fixer,” enhance the site and allow you to customize it beyond standard options. Do note that most of these scripts require that you first download Greasemonkey, and not all are compatible with every browser, so be sure to check the requirements before you download a script.

1. Facebook Fixer.

This script lets you customize your Facebook account and offers many features that are enabled by default, but can be enabled or disabled independently. Some of these features include: larger profile and album pictures; homepage customization where you can hide independent sections such as pokes, suggestions and “connect with friends”; and calendar integration, which includes a link on each profile that synchs birthdays with Google Calendar, or the option to export a file with all your friends’ birthdays, which can be imported into sites such as Google Calendar, Yahoo, Apple iCal, Microsoft Outlook and more.

2. Facebook Purity.

The Facebook Purity script cleans up your homepage and removes all newsfeed items from third-party games such as Mafia Wars and FarmVille, and zaps announcements on who’s become friend with who, who’s attending a certain event, who joined a group and who became a fan of something. Optional items you can block include: comments on a status, photo, photo album or link; tags in a photo or photo album; and event postings.

3. Unfriend Finder.

Now I know this title may seem like a bold statement to make, but I think it is true. Let me tell you why I don’t believe anyone is making money from social media, at least not real money.

Most People in Social Media Calling Themselves Experts are Full of It!

In my experience, there are three types of people hawking their wares in Social Media right now:

The Social Media Expert: The person who does not really know how to make money online by developing/marketing products people want because they

No One's Making Money

simply do not know how to do so or are just too damn lazy to learn. These people typically will try to sell you “consulting services” and call themselves Social Media Experts. If you are considering hiring some like this, ask a really simple question before you fork over your dough. Hey Mr/Mrs so called Expert, “Have YOU made any money directly related to what you are telling me to do?” If they say no, or worse, elude the question all together, don’t be an idiot. Do not give them your money! Instead, give it to my 13-year-old niece who can give you just as good if not better advise on how to use Facebook and Twitter to engage people.

The Link Spammer: The person who is jamming a link down your throat at every turn

The Link Spammer

and is just one spammy move from getting their account suspended or deleted. This person knows nothing about what they are doing and I can guarantee you they are broke. Don’t follow ANY links unless they engage you on some level first, and then ask you if you are interested, and then present an offer. Typically you will find the normal long form sales letter with assorted emotional triggers like scarcity and fear waiting for you on the other side of these links since this is the only way they know how to sell, by praying on the weak and innocent. These links are typically seen in Facebook or Twitter status updates. Note to Spammers: Don’t be idiots people, nobody is clicking on your damn links so take your smelly junk elsewhere!

The Traffic Cop: This is the person who is using Social Media to divert traffic to other things they are doing in the more typical Internet Marketing arena. They will tend to be using social media traffic in amore ethical way and have a real chance to make some money. The good ones will be giving tons of value upfront, good actionable

The Traffic Cop

content that builds trust and proves their knowledge. It is this type of “business professional” that takes what they are doing very seriously, that knows their space, and is in the business for the “long haul”. They are NOT your fly-by-night jackasses just trying to sell you something to earn a quick buck. You will learn the difference quickly.

Show Me The Money

So the next logical question…is there anyone actually making money IN Social Media? Well, Yes and No.

Huh?

I know that sounds a little confusing, so let me explain. The are people making money directly related to either training people how to use Social Media sites (i.e. product developers or system developers) and those that know how to REALLY utilize the tools to engage people. Let me expand:

The Product/System Developer: This is the person who really learns everything about a platform, proves a model or system through extensive testing, and then and ONLY then do they teach it to someone else. This is the true expert, who can point to systematic testing results and money earned results of what they have done

The Idea Funnel

utilizing a social media platform. I put myself into this category with the product I developed, The Twitter Traffic Machine (no longer available for sale). Results highlighted will typically NOT be the number of followers, but the number of people engaged that click on links (which are tracked), and that opt in to an email campaign and ultimately make a purchase decision. These campaigns will ALWAYS be followed by tons of valuable content designed to engage the audience and build the coveted trusting relationship, leading eventually to a purchase decision. It is not atypical to discover 10-30 follow up emails, multiple videos helping people learn these platforms, among other valuable posts and updates continuously being delivered by this person. A good example of a really well done product for Facebook is Crowd Conversion (this is an affiliate link) by Ian David Chapman and Robert Grant.

The Edutainer: This person, as it sounds, not only delivers great content and teaching, but entertains the audience very well. Most people are NOT having a great time on a daily basis, so the Edutainer that can help lift the spirits of their audience, while providing value combined with well orchestrated follow up campaigns will do well, especially if they have mastered the art of product development. One of the most prominent people in this classification was Perry Belcher, who has now disappeared from the face of the Social Media earth. I think Salty Droid made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Perry/Salty, what really happened…?

The Celebrity Edutainer: Gary Vee, need I say more. This is the person who has an electric

Gary Vaynerchuk

personality that totally understands how to use Social Media, and in specific video technologies like YouTube.com and Ustream.tv to advantage of and drive massive amounts of truly rabid followers. The person has achieved status through a tremendous amount of hard, smart work combining many of the above characteristics.

So, here is the sum up.

There are very few people making money in Social Media, period.

The ones that are making money are those that came from other disciplines like Internet Marketing whereby they have built and understand the extensive backend work that is required to build trust with people.

Most people that call themselves Social Media Experts are probably broke. Make sure you ask the simple question from above if your are planning on hiring someone to help you with your business.
